Renewing your EHIC or GHIC

You don't renew an old EHIC as such. When it expires, you apply for a new UK GHIC (or a UK EHIC if you qualify). It's free, the same as a first application.

When can I renew?

The NHS says you can apply for a new card up to 9 months before your current one expires. Look at the expiry date on the front of your card. If you're going away soon, don't leave it to the last minute. Delivery can take up to 15 working days after approval.

My old EHIC is still in date

You can keep using it until the date printed on it. When that date passes, apply for a GHIC.

My card has already expired

An expired card won't be accepted. Apply for a new one straight away. If you're already abroad and need treatment, ask for a Provisional Replacement Certificate.

How to renew

  1. Open the official NHS page (button below).
  2. Apply with your name, address, date of birth and National Insurance number (plus Health and Care number in Northern Ireland).
  3. Add any family members whose cards are also expiring.
  4. Watch for the approval email, then the card in the post.

Apply free on the official NHS website →

How long does a GHIC last?

Up to 5 years.

Renewal reminders and fees

You'll never need to pay to renew. Be careful with emails or adverts offering to "renew your EHIC" for a fee. They're not from the NHS.
